Situated in Tampak Siring district, Tirta Empul is a temple that’s popular among Hindu worshippers and tourists from all over the world. Also known as a pura, the temple’s special feature is its blessed spring water that flows into various baths within the temple grounds. An underground water source supplies this holy water through spouts, where worshippers bathe under to seek blessings from the gods, cleanse from bad spirits and purify themselves.

Tourists fascinated by these cleansing rituals flock to Tirta Empul to marvel at the beauty of this ancient temple and also partake in the purification experience.

1. Tirta Empul temple entrance fee

To be able to enter the area of Tirta Empul Tampak Siring, visitors are required to pay an entrance fee of Rp 30,000 per adult. Opening hours are 7am to 5pm daily.

Tirta Empul consists of three parts: the ‘Nista Mandala’ located on the outer part of the temple grounds, the ‘Madya Mandala’ located in its centre, and ‘Utama Mandala’ located in the inner section. There are two rectangular water pools near Madya Mandala for the cleansing ritual.

The ritual begins by putting a ‘canang’ or offerings filled with burning, after which the whole body is washed from the tip of the head using the holy water.

2. Tirta Empul temple dress code

All visitors are required to use a sarong tied at the waist to cover their knees. Sarongs are provided at the gate and has to be worn at all times within the temple grounds. You will not be allowed enter the main temple with a wet sarong so we recommend taking a dip in the cleansing bath after you’re done exploring the temple grounds.

3. How to get to Tirta Empul Temple

Tirta Empul Temple is a convenient pit stop from travelers coming from southern Bali. Many tourist stop over at the temple after visiting Ubud or Tegalalang, however currently there are no public transportation services from the south.

The best option is to hire a private driver for your day trip and combine attractions with Gunung Kawi temple. For 8 hours, the rental of a car with an English-speaking driver can cost about 600,000 Rp.

From Ngurah Rai airport of Denpasar, you’ll need an hour and fifteen minutes to get to the temple by car.
